Behavioral Distraction Techniques

Distraction techniques are commonly used to keep patients focused on something besides the scan or procedure they are undergoing. At Children's Hospital Boston, pediatric patients requiring radiology scans who cannot be sedated or receive general anesthesia for various reasons are offered behavioral distraction techniques. We encourage different techniques and parent involvement to improve coping skills for present and future scans or procedures. Behavioral distraction techniques include, but are not limited to, assorted visuals, breathing techniques, comfort measures, and diversional talk.
